The Audi Q5: Safety and Options

The Audi Q5 first launched in 2009 and has since become a massive success, currently ranking as the best-selling Audi in the United States. As such, it should come as no surprise that Audi wanted to tread lightly with any changes. Yet, this year marks the release of an all-new redesign and the first of the second-generation of Audi Q5 and its engineers really did find ways to improve on this already solid success. This luxury compact SUV comes with more power, quieter cabin, smoother driving, more space, and, critical for drivers of icy rural roads and less-than-ideal Minnesota streets, better safety equipment.

The 2018 Audi Q5 comes packed with a full slate of standard and optional driver-assistance and other safety options. The following is a brief look at some of those exciting features:

The Audi Q5: Safety and Options

  • Airbags
Airbags are one of the most important safety features of any vehicle. The 2018 Q5 comes equipped with six standard airbags as well as Side guard head-curtain airbags for both rows of seats. Drivers can also opt for available rear passenger outboard thorax side airbags for even more protection.

  • Safety in the engineering
In the event of an accident, you want to know that where you and your family are is safe and secure. The Audi Q5's chassis was engineered so that the front and rear absorb the energy of an impact while the central cabin structure remains rigid.

  • Electronic Stability Control with off road mode
This features offers both safety and performance-enhancement as the system communicates with the quattro all-wheel drive system to detect loss of traction. When the off road mode is off, the system will respond by applying braking to prevent excessive slippage or loss of control. When the off road mode is on, the system will help the driver maintain their intended line through corners via intelligent torque vectoring.

  • Forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection
The Audi Q5 of every package comes standard with a suite of semi-autonomous driver assist systems like forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection. This forward-thinking system utilizes front-facing radar and cameras to detect slowed or stopped vehicles, pedestrians, and similar bodies like bicyclists. It will then alert the driver of the upcoming obstacle.

  • Low-speed automatic braking
Should the driver ignore or otherwise not react in a timely fashion to the aforementioned forward-collision warning, then the Q5 will apply automatic braking to either prevent a collision or at least reduce the potential damages.

  • Lane-keeping assist
Drive fatigue and distraction happen to even the most alert drivers. Lane-keeping assist is a key safety feature that alerts drivers that they are about to deviate from a lane and potentially into traffic or a road hazard.

Other key features that come standard on all of the 2018 Audi Q5 packages and are part-safety and part-driver convenience include:

  • Power central locking system with safety unlock feature during an airbag deployment
  • Anti-lock Brake System with Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution and brake assist
  • Keyless engine start and stop
  • Rain and light sensors for automatic windshield wipers and headlights
  • Rear view camera
  • Hill descent control
